MOUNTAIN IRON CITY COUNCIL

August 17, 2026

Mayor Anderson called the City Council meeting to order at 6:30p.m. with the following members present: Councilor Ed Roskoski, Bradley Gustafson, Alan Stanaway, Julie Buria, and Mayor Peggy Anderson. Also, present were: Craig Wainio, City Administrator; Tim Satrang, Director of Public Works; Anna Amundson, Library Director/Special Events Coordinator; Amanda Inmon, Municipal Services Secretary; Bryan Lindsay, City Attorney; and Mark Madden, Fire Department Representative.

It was moved by Buria and seconded by Gustafson the consent agenda be approved as follows:

  1. Approve the minutes of August 3, 2026, regular meeting.
  • That the communications be accepted and placed on file and those requiring further action by the City Council be acted upon during their proper sequence on the agenda.
  • To acknowledge the receipts for the period August 1-15, totaling $337,429.76 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).
  • To authorize the payments of the bills and payroll for the period August 1-15, totaling $551,211.51 (a list is attached and made a part of these minutes).

The motion carried unanimously.

It was moved by Roskoski that the following Misc. General income, account number 101-37-7100-023; League of MN Cities – workers comp reimbursement in the amount of $7,016.00, State of Minnesota – Dept. Child and Youth, Restorative Practices – Parenting Circles in the amount of $11,613.83 and Cash-Merritt Days Treasure hunt not found in the amount of $175.00 for a total of $18,804.83 become part of the August 17, 2025, City Council meeting minutes. The motion failed due to lack of support.

Public Forum:

  • Steve Giorgi, res, chairman of Planning and Zoning Board, inquiring concerns and frustrations regarding legal actions regarding zoning infractions and perpetual ongoing violations

The Mayor reported on the following:

  • No formal report

City Administrator:

  • ADA complaint website working mountainiron.gov
  • Next meeting 2025 Audit available

Director of Public Works:

  • Current and upcoming projects –
    • Hydrant repair – Mud Lake Rd/ Unity Dr
    • Replacing chips at Mtn Manor Apt playground
    • Hydrant flushing and jetting sewers

Library Director/Special Events Coordinator:

  • Thanks to all those who helped with National Night Out

It was moved by Roskoski and seconded by Buria to approve the request as presented by the Mountain Iron Public Library for road closures/cones beginning Thursday, August 20th from 10:00am – 2:00pm in the following locations for a “So Long Summer” event partnering with Expectancy Church and Friends of the Library (“train” route):  

  • Mountain Avenue from Locomotive Park (north) to Main Street (Library side)
  • Main Street from Marble Avenue to Mountain Avenue (north side)
  • Locomotive Street from Mountain Avenue to Marble Avenue (south Side)
  • Marble Avenue from Locomotive Street to Main Street (west side)

The motion carried.

It was moved by Roskoski that the entire length of the new Mineral Avenue alley, from Main Street South down to the right hand turn on the way bottom end, be made perfectly straight and the alley area behind 5730, 5732, 5734 be lowered at least eight inches or more for proper backyard drainage and safer driveway access. The motion failed due to lack of support.     

City Attorney:

  • Spoke with several P&Z members regarding enforcement on non-compliant properties

It was moved Stanaway and seconded by Gustafson, for Mr. Lindsay to draw up a “Not to exceed letter,” to propose to the City for Council approval, for those properties that could possibly go to civil litigation regarding noncompliance and zoning infractions. The motion carried.

Fire Department:

  • Thanks to all those that helped with the “Kid’s corner” during National Night Out

It was moved by Roskoski to approve the Fire Department report as presented. The motion failed due to lack of support.

It was moved by Stanaway and seconded by Buria to pay the Fire Fighters at the DNR rate of $25.00/hr. for the time and effort that they put forth helping and supporting during the wildfires in the Ely area. The motion passed unanimously on roll call vote.

It was moved by Stanaway and seconded by to accept the recommendation of the Fire Department and earmark the remaining amount of the billing dollars received from the DNR for the wildland fires in the Ely area; $91,177.84 to be reinvested into the FD equipment for replacement on Engine 04; hose and nozzle replacement on 04, 01 (relocated to new engine 27 when delivered); UTV w/tracks, wildland/patient rescue skid and trailer (set-up to be billable for DNR incidents and respond to MIFD wildland and trail accidents;  and Fire Prevention Educational Inflatable House (use for fire prevention, NNO, Merritt Days, Community Steps, etc.). The motion carried unanimously.

Liaison:

  • Councilor Roskoski thanked all those that helped with Merritt Days

Announcement:

  • City offices Closed September 7th – Labor Day

At 7:11p.m., it was moved by Buria and seconded by Gustafson the meeting be adjourned. The motion carried unanimously.
